Weekly update 41

You can become a serverless blackbelt. Enrol in my course Learn you some Lambda best practice for great good! and learn best practices for performance, cost, security, resilience, observability and scalability. By the end of this course, you should be able to make informed decisions on which AWS service to use with Lambda and how to build highly scalable, resilient and cost-efficient serverless applications.

Hi, welcome to another weekly update.

Learn you some Lambda best practice for great good!

After a lot of hard work I have finally published my new course, Learn you some Lambda best practice for great good!. There are a total of 45 lessons and 3 hours of content that covers best practices for performance, scalability, resilience, security, observability and cost. Unlike Production-Ready Serverless, which gave you a project you can build from start to finish, the lessons here are all independent so you can easily drop in & out according to fit your schedule.

Here are some of the things you will learn in this course:

  • tuning function memory setting for performance and cost
  • the factors that affect cold start and how to improve cold start performance
  • new features from re:Invent 2019 such as Provisioned Concurrency
  • how to use multi-region, active-active to build highly resilient serverless applications
  • partial handling techniques for Kinesis and SQS
  • how to store and distribute secrets safely
  • overview of distributed tracing tools such as X-Ray, Lumigo, Epsagon and Thundra
  • what alerts you should set up in your application
  • API Gateway vs HTTP API vs ALB
  • SNS vs SQS vs Kinesis vs EventBridge
  • peripheral services you need to look out for so their cost don’t spiral out
  • and many more..

You can enrol at lambdabestpractice.com and follow @LearnLambda for announcements and promo codes. For the next few days you can still get 33% off with the code my-llama-valentine. I really hope you find this course useful, and please don’t hesitate to let me know your feedbacks and suggestions for topics that I should cover in the course.

I spoke at the ServerlessDays Cardiff this past week. It was another well-organized event, so kudos to Matt Lewis and his team. This year they attracted around 300 people, a whole 50% increase on last year! As always, it was great to see some old friends and meet some ones.

Here’s the slides for my opening keynote on how to refactor an existing monolith to serverless in 8 steps.

I have teamed up with fellow AWS Serverless Hero, Ant Stanley, to offer my 2-day Production-Ready Serverless workshop in London on March 16th-17th, in addition to running the same workshop in Amsterdam on March 19th-20th.

You can enrol for the London workshop on his brand new platform Senzo.io, early bird tickets are still on-sale until the end of February.

If London is too far for you, then check out all my other workshop locations and dates. The Amsterdam workshop is almost fully booked, just the last few seats left. But then there’s still Helsinki and Stockholm in May.

Thank you to my patrons

Finally, I want to give a shout out to my patrons:

Alexis, Andre Silva, Boseok In, Dome Jantaphat, Ebru Cucen, Hrafnkell Palsson, Jon Barber, Jonathan Kosgei, Kevin Woods, Luis Gutierrez, Marko @ Serverless Life, Michael Wills, Sal DiStefano, Shawn MacIntyre, Tendies123, Will Saunders, Yinan Xue
